Taiwanese pearl milk tea to appear in new TV series

Taiwan’s signature pearl milk tea will be among the country’s delicacies to appear in Hollywood comedian Rob Schneider’s new TV comedy series, Real Rob, the actor said on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Schneider, a longtime fan of Taiwanese food and culture, said he has incorporated elements of Taiwanese food into his new documentary-style series because of his fondness for the country.

Besides pearl milk tea, Dongshan duck head (東山鴨頭) and tieguanyin (鐵觀音) — a type of oolong tea — will also be showcased in the series, which is to consist of eight 30-minute episodes.

Schneider has said that the series, which he financed and in which he stars, is based on an “exaggerated version” of his life.

The series is still being filmed, but Schneider said he believes whoever watches it will want to visit Taiwan.

The cast and crew on Tuesday shot a scene at the TenRen Taiwanese teashop in Los Angeles.

In the show, Schneider comically attributes his virility and his wife’s pregnancy to pearl (or boba) milk tea, dubbed “Boba Viagra” in the show.

The US actor, who is best known in Taiwan for the Deuce Bigalow films, spent his honeymoon in Taiwan in 2011, saying previous trips to the country had left him impressed with the friendliness of the locals and with Taiwanese cuisine.

He and his wife returned to Taiwan the following year to have wedding shots taken at New Taipei City’s Sandiaojiao Cape (三貂角). They later agreed to provide the photos to Taiwan’s tourism authorities for use in promoting travel in Taiwan.
