TSU legislator’s lawsuit challenges Premier Jiang
By Loa Iok-sin / Staff reporter
Having filed an attempted murder lawsuit against Premier Jiang Yi-huah (江宜樺) over the violent crackdown on protesters who briefly took over the Executive Yuan compound in March, Taiwan Solidarity Union Legislator Chou Ni-an (周倪安) yesterday urged Jiang to appear in court on Monday.
Chou was wounded during the crackdown that began just after midnight on March 24 after thousands of protesters took over the Executive Yuan at about 7pm on March 23, hoping to stop police assaults on unarmed protesters against the cross-strait service trade agreement.
However, Chou said she was attacked by the police and injured.
“According to both the Geneva Convention and the Police Power Exercise Act (警察職權行使法), officers should follow the principle of proportionality when exercising their power,” Chou told a press conference at the legislature. “Attacking unarmed student protesters and legislators — and intentionally attacking people’s heads — is certainly illegal.”
Saying that she has evidence to show that it was Jiang who ordered the attacks, she filed the lawsuit against the premier.
She also called on National Police Agency Director-General Wang Cho-chiun (王卓鈞) to step down.
“I hereby call on officers involved to turn yourselves in, or turn your colleagues in if you know they were involved, for the honor of the police force,” she said.
